The Cherokee Arts Center building is an Historic Landmark whose origin dates back to the 1800’s. It was first erected as the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1842. The land for the church building measured 110 feet by 150 feet and was donated by Judge Donaldson.  The first building was a small, wooden frame structure which was used for many years as a church and a school.

In 1850, the second church building was started on the same site. This building, taking several years to complete, was brick and served the congregation for about seventy-five years.

Plans began in 1920 to build another church which would once again stand on the same site. The Alter rail from the second church building was removed for use in the new building, and this 1850 alter rail is now housed in The Arts Center Gallery. The building was completed and dedicated May 2, 1926.  Bishop Warren A. Candler stated, “It was the first church building of its ‘pretensions’ he had ever known to be paid in full before dedication day”.  This church was used for sixty-six years.

This historic building was deeded by Cherokee County to the Cherokee Arts Council in September 1998.  It has since been updated and re-purposed as the Cherokee Arts Center.  The upkeep and maintenance on such a treasure is ongoing and expensive.  All donations and volunteer interest is greatly appreciated.
